Outlook 2003 can’t open some Attachments
By TheEmperor | February 26, 2008
I have recently seen this issue coming up with a few different people with emails sent from blackberrys. The email appears with an attachment that is a small yellow icon. When you double click on it nothing happens, but when you forward the mail to someone else they can open it and web mail like hotmail can open it. The solution to this very odd issue turned out to be quite simple.
First close Outlook completely, open the Task Manager and make sure Outlook.exe isn’t listed in the Process tab anywhere. If it is, click on it and click End Task.
Now Hold down the Ctrl key and double click on Outlook. It will ask if you want to open it in safe mode. Say “Yes”.
Now try to open one of the attachments and it should work. “But wait!” you might be saying, “This isn’t a solution, it’s a kludge!” and you would be right. This is not the solution, we’re just making sure that you are having the correct problem for this solution. If you were able to open the file in safe mode then move on to the next step.
Now close Outlook again and open it normally. Now click on Tools, Options.
Now click the Other tab, then clickAdvanced Options.
At the bottom of the screen you will see two buttons, Add-In Manager and COM Add-ins.
Click on Add-In Manager and UNCHECK the Google Toolbar add-in. Now click ok and click on the COM Add-ins button. Again UNCHECK the Google Toolbar add-in and UNCHECK the iTunes add-ins. Now click ok, close outlook and reopen it normally. You should be able to open the attachments now.
