    Software Review: Event Log Explorer

    By TheEmperor | September 18, 2008

In the course of my time as the undisputed overlord of all things technology related it has frequently fallen to me to delve into the Windows Event Logs in search of proof that a mischievous user has deleted their own files or to wrest from them a reason for the demise of a database. Each time I gird myself to wade through the logs I cringe for a moment at the lack of functionality inherent in the basic Event Log Viewer until I remember that I no longer use that malformed and crippled child of Redmond for my log perusal. I have moved on to better things, specifically the Event Log Explorer from FSPRO Labs.

The Event Log Explorer adds some seriously needed functionality to Event Log viewing in Windows. The first and most useful is the ability to search through the logs based on the text in the log and not just based on event categorys and other useless tags. If I know that the file that was deleted is named “AccountingRecords.xls” I can search for “AccountingRecords.xls” and find all of the log entries related to that file. Honestly this is all of the improved functionality anyone should need to hear about to immediately run over and download Event Log Explorer, but just in case that’s not enough it also has support for tabbed views of all of your log files as well as logfiles from multiple systems (Up to 3 at a time on the free version).

This will definitely be one of the most useful and time saving tools you’ve ever had the pleasure of using if you spend any time at all viewing windows Event Logs.
